Do you need an Auger?

An auger is a handy piece of equipment that comes in a wide range of sizes. Augers are used to bore holes of various sizes. Augers essentially have 3 parts to them: the Mounting Bracket which connects the Excavator to the Auger; the Auger Drive which is where the torque is produced to turn the auger, driven by flexible hydraulic hoses that power the powerful gearbox; and the Spiral drilling attachment. Augers are also sometimes referred to as drilling tools or borers, or sometimes as wimbles or gimlets.

The size of auger you choose will depend on the size of hole you need to create – and where you need to do it. While they come in different sizes they tend to look the same, featuring a rotating metal shaft. The spiral metal welded to the shaft at the end of the auger is known as the ‘flighting’.

What is the purpose of an Auger

An auger is a tool that bores holes. In construction augers might be used to dig trenches for irrigation or drainage, for piling work for new buildings, and for drilling holes for posts for a wide range of purposes like retaining walls, fencing or kiwifruit vines and other horticultural shelters.

Augers not only make light work of creating big, deep holes; they also deliver high quality holes of consistent quality which is important in construction.

Can you put an Auger on an excavator?

You can attach an auger drive to an excavator which makes it easier to bore large holes. Augers come in a wide range of sizes that allow you to choose the best auger for the hole you need to create.

Allways Hire has auger drives/torque earth drills available to hire in a range of sizes that are perfect for fencing work, screwing piles or anchors, tree planting, heat pumps or ground drainage. Choose from 275mm, 300mm, 450mm, 600mm & 750mm augers that suit 1.7T to 10T excavators/diggers (also available for hire). Hydraulic requirement is 40 – 95 lt / min.

Can an auger drill through rock?

Earth augers are designed to drill through soil. They can cope with a small quantity of rock or stone in the soil but ideally you should remove obstacles before drilling.

Larger obstacles or challenges like heavy clay soil, rocks or tree roots may mean you need a different tool. Rock augers are specifically designed to drill through rock and may be a better choice if you’re dealing with a challenging location.
