That’s what Fanie Roode, a Foreman from Rockit Apples appreciated when the 70 hectare block of apples he manages in Hawke’s Bay experienced significant flooding. He needed a solution and fast. “Since November last year we’ve been flooded 4 times. Some of the orchard has been a metre, a metre and a half under water. [The first time it happened] we needed to think on our feet and think quite fast to find a way to get rid of the water because we can’t have our trees standing in water for weeks on end.

We decided to hire [water] pumps from Allways Hire. We got flooded over the weekend and on that Monday morning, we were there just after 7 at the gates and [they] opened the gates to let us in and said you’re more than welcome to take the pumps.

The first time we hired them they told us exactly what to do. They were pretty good at explaining to us how the pumps work and how to operate it. Very knowledgeable and I can’t fault their friendliness, absolutely brilliant. They have looked after us and we’re really thankful for that.

The fourth time we got flooded I rang and the pumps were already out for hire. The guy promised me we would be the next people on the list. And they actually rang me back that afternoon and said it’s ready for hire, it’s come back and we’ve fully serviced it and it’s ready for you to collect.

If it wasn’t for the pumps we probably would have lost probably half the crop and then the trees would have been badly affected by their wet roots and would have started to die. In the end we were pretty lucky we didn’t lose any trees due to the flooding. If it wasn’t for those pumps that we hired from Allways Hire we would have been in deep deep trouble.

[Allways Hire are] so friendly, just always happy to help us. Because [they] are local it’s easy to access and the business hours – [they have] bent business hours to suit us. The staff are extremely friendly. It’s hard to fault them – it’s a big advantage dealing with Allways Hire because of the staff and the equipment available. And as a local business we will really support them.
